Ford Takes the Top Spot for Quality in the 2026 J.D. Power Study

When we talk with customers at our Ford dealership about buying a new vehicle, quality is almost always part of the conversation.

People want to know what they are getting for their money. They want a vehicle that feels good to drive, works the way it should and gives them confidence long after they leave the dealership.

That is why the latest news from J.D. Power caught our attention.

Ford has been named the number one mainstream automotive brand in the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study. For Ford, this is a significant accomplishment. It is the first time the brand has earned the top position among mainstream brands since 2010.

As someone who works in dealership marketing, I think this is worth talking about because quality is not something you can fully judge from a brochure or a quick walk around the showroom. It becomes part of your everyday ownership experience.

And Ford has made some serious progress in that area.

A Major Move Up the Rankings

Ford's latest result is especially impressive when you look at where the brand was just a few years ago.

In 2023, Ford ranked number 15 among mainstream brands in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

This year, Ford is number one.

That is a substantial change in a relatively short period of time.

Ford also recorded 41 fewer problems per 100 vehicles compared with the previous year. According to Ford, that was the largest year over year improvement among mainstream brands. For someone shopping for a new vehicle, those numbers give us another reason to pay attention to what Ford has been doing behind the scenes.

Seven Ford Vehicles Finished in the Top Three

The brand ranking is only part of the story.

Several individual Ford vehicles also performed extremely well in the study.

The Ford F 150 , Ford Mustang and Ford Super Duty each ranked highest in their respective segments.

The Ford Escape , Ford Explorer, Ford Expedition and Ford Maverick also finished among the top three in their segments.

That means seven of the 10 Ford models evaluated ranked among the top three in their respective categories.

From our perspective at the dealership, that broad performance is important.

Customers walk through our doors looking for very different things.

One person may need a pickup truck for work.

Another may be looking for a third-row SUV for a growing family.

Someone else may want a compact SUV for commuting.

And there are always customers who simply want a Mustang because they have wanted one for years.

Seeing quality results across so many different types of vehicles is encouraging for all of those shoppers.

What Does the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study Actually Measure?

If you have never looked into the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study before, it is worth understanding what the results mean.

The study looks at problems reported by owners during the first 90 days of vehicle ownership. That makes it different from a long-term reliability study.

Initial quality is about the early ownership experience, and the issues customers encounter soon after purchasing a new vehicle.

I would never tell a customer that one study should be the only factor in choosing a vehicle. There are plenty of other things worth considering, including how a vehicle fits your lifestyle, its features, performance, fuel economy, comfort, available technology and overall value.

Still, quality is an important piece of the puzzle.

When a brand shows this level of improvement, it is something worth putting on the list when you are researching your next vehicle.

Ford Has Made Technology a Major Part of Its Quality Efforts

Today's vehicles are considerably more advanced than they were even a few years ago.

Your vehicle may have a large digital display, smartphone connectivity, driver assistance technology, navigation, connected services and numerous electronic systems working every time you start the engine.

That technology can make driving more convenient, but it also creates another area where manufacturers need to get things right.

Ford has focused heavily on improving software and infotainment quality.

According to the latest results, infotainment performance improved to 11 points better than the industry average.

Ford also uses over the air updates throughout its current vehicle lineup. These updates can deliver software fixes, improvements and new features without requiring every update to happen during a dealership visit.

For customers, that means technology does not necessarily stop evolving once the vehicle leaves the showroom.

Quality Is About More Than What Happens at the Factory

One of the things I find most interesting about Ford's quality improvement is how much work goes into a vehicle before it ever arrives at a dealership.

Ford has brought engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and quality teams closer together during vehicle development.

The company has also added experienced engineers to help identify potential problems earlier in the design process.

That is important because preventing an issue before production is far better than trying to address it after vehicles are already in customers' driveways. Ford has also increased its involvement with suppliers during development and validation.

According to the company, this helped reduce launch issues by 30 percent compared with the previous year.

Those are the kinds of changes customers may never see when they visit a dealership, but they can have a direct impact on the vehicle they eventually drive.

The Manufacturing Process Matters Too

Vehicle quality does not come down to one department or one person.

It is the result of thousands of decisions made throughout the development and manufacturing process.

Ford has been working to give employees on the factory floor a larger role in identifying opportunities for improvement.

The company is also using technologies such as AI powered vision systems to help identify manufacturing anomalies.

There is something refreshing about that approach.

Instead of simply looking for problems after they happen, Ford is putting more emphasis on identifying potential issues early and preventing them from reaching customers.

That is exactly the kind of mindset you want from a company building the vehicle you are going to own for years.

What This Means When You Shop for a New Ford

The biggest takeaway for shoppers is simple.

Ford is showing measurable improvement in new vehicle quality, and that improvement is showing up across much of the lineup.

That does not mean every customer should automatically choose a Ford.

Buying a vehicle is personal.

Your needs are different from the next person's, and the right vehicle depends on everything from your daily commute to how many people you regularly carry. What this recognition does provide is another reason to put Ford on your shopping list.

If you have been considering a new Ford, now is a great time to see what has changed.

  • Take a look at the latest vehicles.

  • Sit inside them.

  • Explore the technology.

  • Take a test drive.

  • Ask questions.

As a dealership marketing manager, I can tell you that the best part of our job is helping customers find the vehicle that genuinely fits their lives. Awards and industry recognition are helpful, but ultimately, you should experience the vehicle for yourself.

Come See the Difference for Yourself

The 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study gives Ford customers plenty to feel good about.

Ford is now the number one mainstream brand in the study, and seven Ford vehicles finished among the top three in their respective segments.

That is a result worth celebrating.

More importantly, it gives customers another reason to take a serious look at the latest Ford lineup.

If you are thinking about purchasing a new vehicle, stop by our Ford dealership and see what is available. Our team can help you compare models, explore features and take a test drive so you can decide which Ford makes the most sense for you.
